LAD/Blog #1: Mayflower Compact/Fundamental Orders of CT

1.) What concepts are included in the Mayflower Compact?
One concept included in the Mayflower Compact is the concept of religion, and it is clear that it was very important to the writers. There are many references to religion throughout the document, and it even begins with "In the name of God, Amen." It is also mentioned that the mission was "undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith."

2.) How does the Mayflower Compact reflect an attachment to both the "Old" and "New" worlds?
The document clearly shows that while the colonists are in a new land, they still have deep ties to Europe, or the "Old" world. The document reflects an attachment to the "New" world when it is mentioned that the colonists set sail with the goal of founding the first settlement in the northern parts of Virginia. However, the document also directly references the "Old" world, and King James is mentioned several times in the document.

3.) How did the fundamental orders of Connecticut differ from the Mayflower Compound?
The Mayflower Compound is an agreement between the colonists. However, the Fundamental Orders is a list of laws. The difference is that the Fundamental Orders are an official form of government and law, while the Mayflower Compact is merely an agreement between the colonists to act in a unified and civilized manner.

4.) What prompted the colonists of Connecticut to take this approach to government?
The colonists of Connecticut decided to use a written constitution because it would provide a finalized and clear set of laws that could be followed by both the current colonists and the generations that would come after them.

5.) In what significant ways does the Fundamental Orders reflect a fear of and safeguard against the usurping of power by one person or a chosen few?
A fear of the usurping of power is shown by the fact that there are several laws that limit the amount of power that could be gained by an individual or group. One way is that it is clearly specified that a person could only be governor once every two years, setting a limit on the amount of power one person could gain. There are also systems of checks and balances written into the laws.
